Professionalism in India 01/08/2018

Suits, ties, and tea. That is the summation of January 8th. Our experience in India is planned accordingly to be a balance between sightseeing and networking with businesses and professionals. Following up yesterday's visit to the Taj Mahal and the Red Fort of Agra, today was certainly one of the most business oriented days we have had the pleasure of leading.

The day commenced with a trip to James Walter Thompson, a marketing consulting firm. We have been greeted with traditional Indian hospitality, via tea and cultural snacks. This lunch period took about 40 minutes, however it provided us time to observe the corporate scenery and prepare a few questions. I believe I speak for everyone when I say, no one asked their prepared questions.

We did not expect them to present their presentations in such a simple and humorous manner. It was a joy to watch, and certainly informative. Neked (Knee-Ked) and Mikrah, consumer marketing strategists, explained thoroughly how advertisements were developed and how audiences were targeted. Additionally, they both also took the time to explain how they incorporated Hofstede's 6 principles (Power distance, individualism, masculinity, uncertainty avoidance, long-term orientation, and indulgence) into their work. If there is one aspect I have taken away from this learning experience, it would be the words of Douglas Coupland:

"We are all the same because we shop in the same malls". Insinuating, we all have commonalities and similar preferences since we undergo through the same experiences.

3 group pictures and a bus ride later, we made our way to Quatrro Global Services. At Quatrro, we were provided the opportunity to witness their tech center, alongside to learn about their services. They are a global IT powerhouse, aiding large franchises with top tier accounting work, and one of the largest women employers (managerial positions) in India. Rajish demonstrated a captivating and informative presentation on what exactly it is that they provide their clientele. From pioneering the Indian business process outsourcing industry to contributing towards women empowerment throughout India, this corporation certainly makes sure to leave their footprint on the globe.

Upon walking towards our tour bus and driving into the sunset, we concluded our journey with dinner at our designated hotel. A day truly capturing professionalism in its entirety, from morning to night. Onward, we Manhattan College scholars adopt multinational professional customs. One step closer to true professionalism.
