Galway: Going to the Prom

Hello again! Today I feel as though I walked across the entire county of Galway, although, I must admit, it was only the Salt Hill Promenade (a.k.a. The Prom). Which, it must be said, can be quite parlous!

After a quick visit to the Galway City Oyster Festival, a friend and I decided to walk to the beach, an area called Salt Hill. Salt Hill is home to the Galway Atlantequaria, a small aquarium, as well as casinos and a large facility called Leisureland (a home for a gym, pool, sauna, indoor mini golf and a water slide!!). The Prom stretches for about two or three miles of beautiful beach with shower facilities, public bathrooms and even a diving platform for swimmers! It is absolutely beautiful and a must see attraction, no matter what month of the year! And yes, for all you doubters, there were swimmers in the water!
Diving Platform and swimmers in the water
Now friends, this is low tide in this picture. The swells here can be so high during high tide or storms that the waves blow clean over the top of the diving platform! Can you imagine that!?

Another cool feature at the end of the Prom is a small, unassuming wall. Now, tradition says that if a person walks from one end all the way to the other of the Prom (the longest stretch of "boardwalk" in Ireland), he or she must kick the wall at the end! Curious about this supposed tradition, my friend and I had to investigate. Well:
The Kicking Stone
So. Bonnie and I had walked the entire length of the Prom, thus... In keeping up with tradition....

Karate Kid style
And yes, not only am I wearing my Manhattan College t-shirt without a sweater or other layers, but! I needed SUNGLASSES! The sun does shine in Galway... not often, but it does! But anyway... it was an absolutely beautiful day, to be followed by an absolutely wonderful Irish Rugby win over Romania in the Rugby World Cup!
