Galway: Hogwarts and Other Fun

So my friends, and to all of you muggles out in the crowd, I have been sorted into Gryffindor!! Oh wait, I think I may be getting a wee-bit ahead of myself here! At NUIG there are myriad clubs and societies for students to join.

Now, what is the difference between a club and a society, you may be wondering? Clubs, here in Ireland, are sports teams like intramurals or rec-leagues. Clubs at NUIG include (and are not limited to) Suba-Aqua Club (SCUBA diving), Sailing, Mountaineering, Ping Pong, Snooker, Pool, Swimming, Triathlon, Boxing, Judo, Tae Kwondo, Girls and Boys Soccer, Hurling, Rugby, Ultimate Frisbee and even Archery! Societies are what we would call clubs, back in the US. Societies include (and are not limited to) PotterSoc, Zoology Society, GIG (Gay in Galway), Marine Animal Society, Rock Society, Film Society, Baking Society, DJ Society, Time Lord Society, Victorian Society, Disney Society, and American Football Society. All great fun, as you might imagine!

Registration for all of these clubs and societies takes place over two days in two separate venues. The venues are huge, entire auditoriums and gyms were used to house the booths and thousands of student attendees! Here's an idea of what it's like...
Societies Sign-Ups
In order for societies to run, each society (and club for that matter) needs to attract a certain, golden, number of students. Students sign up for clubs and societies by scanning their student ID cards. In order to entice more students, clubs and societies will send out members to float around in the crowds and chat up their club/society, or hand out candy, goody bags, and even offer trips to foreign countries or fun destinations within Ireland! PotterSoc handed out our long delayed Hogwarts acceptance letters!

Now, I, like a good newbie and Marsha Brady want-to-be, signed up for just about everything! Tonight was the PotterSoc Sorting Ceremony... as I said, I'm in Gryffindor! And guys, it was a beautiful ceremony!!

It's going to be a magical semester, I can just tell!
