Today was our last day in Abu Dhabi and the overall experience was great. However, the weather today and the last coupe of days have been cloudy and rainy. It is called cloud seeding, where the people here have manipulated the ecological system and the consequences of this would be the thunderstorms. The weather today was very chilly and around noon there was a short rain storm. After talking to local residents, they said that it usually rains around three days out of the year and due to the rain school was closed for the children. Also, many buildings around the city experienced either floods or leaks. It raises a more important question on the building infrastructures and how they can prepare for the climate change. In the photo below you can see the cloudy sky after the rain, I personally was surprised by this weather because it is an island and you expect everyday to be sunny.
The first business visit we had this morning was at the Khalifa Port Free Trade Zone. This visit was very interesting because the Abu Dhabi trade ports are significant to the UAE's GDP. We learned about the operations, logistics and future plans of the trade ports. The location of the ports are near four airports in Dubai and Abu Dhabi which contributes to the overall efficiency. The port also provides the services of the KIZAD advantage, provides businesses with access to markets, infrastructure, free zone solutions and tax free for investors. Some of the impressive infrastructure within the trading ports is the Hot Metal Road and the Modular Path. The Hot Metal Road is a specially constructed roadway that effectively and efficiently delivers aluminum in hot molten form. The Modular Path is designed to transport large plant and equipment between Khalifa's port and the investor's facilities. Another interesting thing I learned about the port, is that they use a clustering approach for their supply chain. This approach groups industries together to link companies to create economies of proximity. Overall what makes the Khalifa Port successful is the transport infrastructure, supply chain efficiency, competitive operating costs and tax free.

Looking back at the overall trip, I would have to say it truly has been a great experience and I would return in the future. Comparing both Dubai and Abu Dhabi they are very different places, but I did prefer Dubai more because I enjoyed the culture and scenery. I loved the fact that we can go into the city at Dubai and visit the huge malls and see sky scrapers and experience luxury. Then go back to the old town and experience the real Arabian culture. One of my absolute favorite days during the trip would be when we visited art galleries in the morning, there were so many unique beautiful pieces. And then we went to the traditional market called the "Souq." I have been to the souq around four times during my trip. I loved the shopping and finding authentic pieces, items that I could never find in the states and really depicts the Arabian culture. And when you're in the market you bargain for the items and it's so much fun because we're so use to paying a set price. I would highly recommend going to Dubai and Abu Dhabi, unforgettable experience and very safe.

Sam,
ReplyDeleteI also thought that the contrast between Dubai and Abu Dhabi was a very important part of our trip! There was a very drastic difference between the cities, but it helped us understand the differences in culture, business, and overall lifestyles of the people in each city. Having the chance to visit businesses in both cities helped me to better understand the importance of oil in Abu Dhabi and the importance that wasn't placed on oil in Dubai. It was something I didn't understand or realize before going on the trip and comparing the two cities in terms of business really helped me understand it better.
