Zuid Kennemerland

Hej from the Netherlands!

It’s Julia, and I'm writing from Amsterdam, Netherlands. As my study abroad trip comes to an end, I decided to write about my day trip to Zuid Kennemerland National Park.

On Sunday we were given a day off to do what we wanted. Having been in the city so much I decided to go to a park somewhere, so I hopped on the intercity train from Amsterdam to Haarlem, rented a bike, and was on my way.

This park was unlike anything I had been to before. It had sand dunes, Scottish highland cows, wild horses, and a beach!

While I was there I biked at least 8 miles through the hills, found the cows and horses, walked along the beach, and had a wonderful conversation with a retired gentleman who caught onto the American accent and asked where I was from and what I was doing here. When I told him about the criminology course he told me about his work in nuclear physics and how his son works for the AIVD, which is the equivalent to the CIA. He told me about his sons' work and life course along with the rest of the family, and it was such an insightful discussion!

On my way back from the park I walked through the town of Haarlem before returning to Amsterdam. While this trip has had so many interesting trips and lessons, I will remember seeing wild horses for the first time in the Netherlands for the rest of my life.
