York: A trip to Helmsley

Today was one of my favorite days of the trip so far. We traveled from York to the town of Helmsley, a place that immediately stood out to me because of how pretty and peaceful it felt. The town has a lot of character, with its stone buildings, small shops, and beautiful countryside surroundings. After arriving in Helmsley, we began walking along part of the Cleveland Way Trail toward Rievaulx Abbey. The walk itself was one of the highlights of the day. The countryside was full of beautiful green fields, and along the way we saw sheep, horses, and other animals. The scenery felt very different from the city and made the journey just as enjoyable as the destination. Eventually, we reached Rievaulx Abbey, one of the most famous ruined monasteries in England. Founded in 1132 by Cistercian monks, the abbey was once one of the largest and most important religious communities in the country. Although much of it is now in ruins, the remains are still incredibly impressive. The tall stone arches and walls give visitors an idea of how massive the complex once was. Surrounded by the Yorkshire countryside, the abbey has a peaceful atmosphere that makes it easy to imagine what life was like there hundreds of years ago. After spending some time exploring the abbey grounds, we made our way back to Helmsley. Once back in town, we visited Helmsley Castle. The castle dates back to the 12th century and has played an important role throughout English history. One of the most interesting parts of the visit was seeing the remains of the castle’s tower and defensive walls. Walking through the ruins gave us a glimpse into what the castle would have looked like when it was still a powerful fortress. Overall, the day was a great mix of history and nature. The walk along the Cleveland Way offered beautiful views of the countryside and local wildlife, while Rievaulx Abbey and Helmsley Castle provided fascinating insights into England’s past. Between the scenery, the historic sites, and the atmosphere of Helmsley itself, it was a  memorable day and one of the most enjoyable excursions of the trip
