One of the highlights of my study abroad trip to Spain was getting to try a wide variety of traditional foods. Whether it was customary evening tapas or entrees served at flamenco shows, every meal was delicious and introduced me to flavors I had never experienced before. To conclude our trip we were fortunate enough to attend a group cooking class. This class taught me how to make some of my favorite dishes I had tried and taught me a bit about their histories. We made an almond flour cake called a tarta de Santiago, tortilla de Española, gazpacho, and paella de marisco.
I will remember these recipes forever, just as I will remember this trip to Spain forever. Getting to learn so much about this country’s history and culture in such a hands on environment is an experience that I will always be grateful for. My scholarship award has given me the gift of knowledge and has sparked my lasting interest in continuing learn more about the world. As I continue to explore new cultures I will fondly look back on where that journey began: Madrid.
