Bimini: Day One of Dolphin Research

After two planes, a four- hour lay over, and some lost luggage our second day on Bimini was a complete success.   The day started with some breakfast and an intro into the research aspect of our trip, but after that the fun began.  A quick snorkel test run in one of the world’s clearest waters; a few jelly fish, some reef fish and a hermit crab the size of a small dinner plate were the cast of our morning snorkel production.  The beach was fun but the boat trip of the afternoon was a once in a life- time experience.  Some lost luggage delayed our first trip out, but allowed for those waiting to witness the beauty of the ocean from the dock where sting rays bigger than a toddler flew through the marina.  After the luggage recovery and a healthy dose of Dramamine we were on our way to look for dolphins.  In less than a half an hour we had our first of four dolphin sightings.  Four bottlenose dolphins allowed the first team of swimmers to get in the water and record data. Our second sighting was a couple of spotted calves who ended up leading the boat to a group of seven spotted dolphins.  Watching from the boat as the dolphins rode the bow was an experience that would put any Sea World trip to shame (as it should be put).  After collecting sound recordings, video, and photo data it was time to head back to the marina.  The sunset on the way back was a picture perfect ending to a day that was nothing short of unforgettable.  I cannot wait to see what the rest of the program has in store because if its anything like today I might not go home.
