After spending some time in our daily dose of traffic, we arrived at Fabindia. We got the opportunity to look around the store and see the various products they offer, which include: floor coverings, linens, tea cups, organic cosmetics, candles, furniture, saris, jewelry and much more. They do a great job incorporating both traditional and modern culture into their work. We met with one of the store managers who was able to give us a little more insight on the background and mission of their business.
Founder, John Bissell, traveled to India where he fell in love and decided to open a store in 1960 where he could showcase diverse handcrafted Indian culture, now located in over 28 different states. For majority of the trip, we saw locals selling produce in markets and on the street. After walking around the store, it was a clear contrast to the informal economy we’ve become familiar too and that only the upper middle class would be able to afford this luxurious merchandise. This is not a place where one would go for every day items, but rather to invest in high quality decor for their home. The merchandise can most similarly be compared to Home Goods or Pier One. Fabindia supports rural craftsmen to continue creating artisanal beauty and keep Indian traditions alive. It is also a way to bridge the urban markets with the rural producers and are internationally known for their quality and ethics. It was a great way to finish up our last day in Delhi with a little shopping before we headed to the airport. Many of us were excited to compare our experiences in North India to the second half of our journey in Bangalore!
