Santa Maria Novella: A visit to the oldest pharmacy in the world

Imagine walking down and enchanted forests and all the aroma of all the flowers filling your nostrils. This was my experience entering the Santa Maria Novella on July 7.

Santa Maria Novella was founded by Dominican friars in 1221. It is one of the oldest pharmacies in the world. The friars created Santa Maria Novella to make medicines, pomades, and balms from the herbs they grew in their pharmacy. In the 1600s they opened it up to the public.

Today Santa Maria Novella is known for making the signature scent for Catherine de Medici. The perfume has a hint of fresh citrus and forestry smell. Here you can find any scent that caters to your unique self. The workers are very sweet and professional when you are looking for your perfume. Along with perfumes they have many skin and body care products for both men, women, and even pets. In a different room, there were candles and things to keep your clothes smelling fresh.

This experience made it clear to me that Chemical Engineering was the right choice for me. Seeing and learning about how monks created herbal medicines and how they turn into such a big part of our lives, I am very excited to be working behind the scenes creating these perfumes and more.
