Islamic Architecture in Spain

Something very special about Spain is the legacy that the Islamic occupation left on many areas of the country. The best example of this is in ancient buildings like covered churches or castles, called alcazars. The architecture is something very special because it really is unlike anything else you will see. It is incredibly well preserved. The details are very intricate with floral and geometric patterns carved into plaster and stone. Something that is an obvious clue that it is Islamic architecture is if there are timber roofs. These alcazars often have courtyards and gardens with fountains and water systems that were more advanced than anywhere else in Europe. When you are in a place like this it amazing to imagine yourself in the same place as rulers from thousands of years ago.
