The past few weeks have been very interesting. I have been exploring more of the city. My favorite areas so far are Malasaña and La Latina. Time is flying by!
February 16th, my friends and I went on a trip to Salamanca with a tour group. There were a lot of other students. Salamanca is known as the Golden City because of its sandstone buildings. Also, during the Second Spanish Civil War, Salamanca was the Nationalist capital. We learned a lot of different things about the city's history from a good tour guide. One interesting fact was that people used to sharpen knives on the walls, leaving scratches visible today. We also went to Ávila, known for its medieval walls.
February 23rd, my friends and I went to El Molar for a wine tasting. We were able to see the huge barrels the wine was stored in and learned about the process of making wine, in Spanish. The wines tasted very nice and we even had tapas and a vermouth. El Molar is around 40 minutes outside of Madrid. It had a great view and was a quaint city. There was also a falcon at the vineyard that helps to keep the rodents under control.
February 24th, I stumbled upon a Chinese Lunar New Year festival. We were able to see some impressive singing and beautiful outfits. We did miss some of the dances but were lucky to catch the last little bit. I was able to try tanghulu, a candied fruit snack. I got one with strawberries and it was very interesting to eat. The shell was super hard! It tasted very good though. I also had chow mei fun, delicious.
March 2nd, we went on a trip to Segovia combined with George Mason University. The people we met were very nice. We saw the aqueducts, Iglesia de San Millán, and Alcázar de Segovia, and were able to explore the city on our own for a bit. We even saw the actor Gonzalo de Castro. The views and architecture were beautiful. It even started to snow! It was a very beautiful visit and we were lucky enough to learn more about the city.
March 13th, went to Pabellón de los Jardines de Cecilio Rodríguez in Parque del Retiro and saw peacocks! We even got to see a few spread their tail feathers.
I am so grateful to be able to see and experience these things!
